A TOAST TO THE UNTRUSTWORTHY—Page Two

It is the very moral turpitude that females engender, the lack of trust, and the furtive glance cast over one’s shoulder at the woman with the glinting eye — or the glinting steak knife — that stimulates the synapses, galvanizes the nerves, freezes the heart —and on occasion can be, frankly, well, exciting. As Charles Addams might have it, it makes life worth living.

Surely Sherlock in his world, not to say we in ours, would be the poorer without the scheme de Ia scheme of womankind. Remember P.G. Wodehouse’s paraphrase of Kipling: “The f. of the s. is much more d. than the m.”

And in that spirit, I ask you to open your poison rings, decant the contents where you will, and raise your glasses in a toast to Women Who Are Never Entirely to Be Trusted.

“DESIGN FOR WALL PAPER

Suitable for a bachelor apartment”

By Charles Dana Gibson

PHILIP A. SHREFFLER, BSI
(Jefferson Hope), is a man who likes to live dangerously—after all, how many men would speculate on their wives’ liaison with a lamb in front of a room full of women, including said wife?
